ASSESSMENT Psychological assessment is an important part of the therapeutic process, particularly at the beginning of an intervention. A psychologist's extensive training and expertise in psychological assessment and diagnosis is the primary reason to seek the services of a licensed psychologist instead of another type of mental health professional. While an intake interview can provide a reasonable initial assessment of an adult, more elaborate assessment is often preferred for children. An accurate diagnosis saves time, trouble, and expense when the nature or cause of a child's difficulties is not clear. My assessment specialties include developmental delays, ADHD, Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD), depression, and anxiety disorders.
When emotional and behavioral issues interfere with academic and social functioning, families and teachers appreciate the assistance of a professional who can assess the child in the school environment and make recommendations sensitive to the needs of teachers, students, and parents. With experience conducting school-based evaluations throughout the state of Alabama, I apply my skills in working with teachers and parents to improve the academic, emotional, and social adjustment of children from preschool through high school.
INDIVIDUAL, FAMILY & MARITAL THERAPY
My areas of experience include:
- TEAM-CBT for anxiety, depression, procrastination
- Autism Spectrum Disorder (formerly, Autism & Asperger's Syndrome)
- Family Counseling
- Parenting Support
- Grief Counseling
- Adolescent Issues
- College Students & Young Adults
- Marriage counseling
My clients appreciate an individualized approach providing a combination of interpersonal process, TEAM-CBT, and coaching. The particular combination depends on the need and readiness for each approach. Psychotherapy is a collaborative process, and I realize that most of a client's growth takes places outside my office. Prayer is often overlooked in clients' lives, and it facilitates progress for those who are open to begin or renew a relationship with God. My clients are welcome to discuss obstacles in any area of their lives, including spiritual issues. In a comfortable and supportive atmosphere, I listen hard and speak softly. In work with children, play is an important part of the therapeutic process.
